Aqwest will build and operate a water treatment plant to deliver fit-for-purpose recycled water to the Bunbury region.
The Water Recovery Scheme project will:
Provide irrigation to 43 hectares of public open space
Save precious groundwater for critical use, such as drinking water
Deliver a long-term sustainable water use initiative
The Scheme will treat and distribute up to 2 gigalitres of recycled wastewater per year, sourced from the Water Corporation’s existing Bunbury Wastewater Treatment Plant. The recycled water product will be delivered to the Hay Park Sporting Precinct via a 4km pipeline.
Water will be treated to the highest standard under the Recycled Water Guidelines in WA, and regulated by the Department of Health. The design includes multiple water treatment processes to produce recycled water that is fit for the purpose of irrigating public open space.
The project will reduce demand on the Yarragadee Aquifer and address immediate climate challenges. It has also been designed to avoid and minimise potential environmental impacts.
Stage 2 of the project proposes a managed aquifer recharge scheme to replenish the local aquifer, potentially avoiding the need for energy-intensive water sources such as desalination.
The Aqwest Water Recovery Scheme will join around 80 other water recycling schemes in operation in Western Australia.
